The Lib Dems got more votes than all the other parties put together

Crystal Palace voters have come out strongly for Lib Dem Tom Papworth and overwhelmingly elected him as Councillor for the ward.

The by-election was the result of the unfortunate death of long-standing councillor Chris Gaster.

Tom increased the Lib Dems' share of the vote from their result in May 2006, gaining more votes than all the other parties put together.

The Lib Dems remain the main opposition party to the Tories on Bromley borough council. The Lib Dem leader in Bromley, Cllr David McBride, said it was a huge boost to the party locally: "This was a hard fought campaign with Labour and the Tories desperate to win. To increase our share of the vote is tremendous for us in Bromley and also in the new parliamentary seat of Lewisham West and Penge, where Labour must now be under threat."
