Thornton Heath Liberal DemocratsFighting for the people of Thornton HeathThornton Heath Liberal Democrats are working hard to make things better in the area. "Labour has taken places like Thornton Heath for granted for too long and have neglected the area," said campaigner Steve Dering. "The Liberal Democrats have a proven track record of making things better." Labour Failing Local SchoolsA damning new report has revealed that thousands of London children are not getting a proper education. The National Audit Office found that as many as 1 in 8 children attend a failing school. In Croydon, 3 schools were failed by OFSTED (Office for Standards in Education), including the Winterbourne Nursery and Infants school in Thornton Heath. "Our children are being let down by Labour," said Thornton Heath Lib Dem campaigner Tomas Howard-Jones. "The Government is currently producing yet another White Paper on education but what we need is less tinkering with structures and more focus on improving teaching. Teachers need more resources and less interference." The Government's latest proposals will allow schools to select pupils and further centralise power. "This latest idea will further undermine parental choice," said Tomas. "What parents actually want is their local school to be high quality, locally-run and accountable to them, not Whitehall." Croydon Lib Dems fear that Labour's latest proposals will force some schools to close and actually reduce parental choice. Read OFSTED's report on Winterbourne. Lib Dems Uncover Over-Crowding Scandal
Thornton Heath Lib Dems have unearthed figures showing that, since Labour came to power in 1997, there has been a dramatic rise in overcrowding on morning trains into London. The Government cannot expect people to get out of their cars and onto public transport when the trains are already bursting at the seams," said Liberal Democrat campaigner Stephen Dering. "One of the first things Labour did in 1997 was to introduce regulations for the transportation of chickens, yet they have done nothing to address the daily human suffering on the railways."
